Ode to the blueberry

12/7/2009

Fall Creek Farm & Nursery's Chris MacLaggan has a notion he would like to share with the collective you: The blueberry might be one of the most versatile plants out there.

OK. It probably should be noted that Fall Creek's primary emphasis is on blueberries, but I beg you to hear out MacLaggan, the company's national sales manager -- and one very organized and determined fellow. He recently sent me a copy of the "Every Season Every Garden" promotional brochure, the text for which reads like this:

Americans are returning to the garden. Small fruits, especially blueberries are hot! Blueberries are so much more than a fruiting plant, perfect for: With beautiful spring flowers, abundant summer fruit, amazing fall color and vibrant winter canes, blueberries are great for garden, landscape, patio and pots.

Science has discovered that blueberries provide antioxidants for fighting disease and aging. Loaded with vitamin C and fiber, one cup of blueberries has a mere 80 calories. Blueberries also offer healthy profits to your garden center or nursery. The consumer demand for blueberry plants is soaring.

Let Fall Creek Farm and Nursery® show you how to maximize your blueberry program. Blueberries will bring your customers amazing health benefits and you’ll see healthy profits.

It certainly doesn't hurt Fall Creek's cause that edibles are about as hot as can be, and MacLaggan and Co. have put together the attached Ripening Season Chart to show how retailers can turn blueberry sales into a full-time proposition. Further, the fruit isn't the plant's only selling point. As the picture below shows, blueberries can also be incorporated into the landscape as a quite-attractive ornamental.

The moral of this story? Obviously, Fall Creek would love your business. But beyond that, if you haven't thought about the blueberry as a plant staple at your store, now would be a good time to start.
