Suggest sedum when customers ask for…

  • Something to brighten up a dry, neglected area
  • A perennial that thrives under benign neglect
  • A plant that offers late-season color
  • Elements for a rock garden
  • A perennial with showy foliage

The Story
Swollen, succulent foliage enables sedum to withstand extended periods of drought and neglect. It is this attribute that endears sedum to its admirers. Foliage color ranges from green through yellow, red, burgundy and blue, while flowers can be white, yellow, pink or red with many combinations of the two categories. Growth habit can vary from low ground coverplants, to those of a more showy upright stature. Culture and history information courtesy of Plant Publicity Holland. Display and marketing possibilities

  • Use sedum in a demonstration showing how to create a “green roof” on small sheds, doghouses, etc.
  • Use non-patented varieties to give a how-to propagation demonstration. Sedum is generally easy to propagate from stem cuttings and seed.
  • Include low, creeping varieties of sedum as unusual specimens in container gardens.
  • Display sedum with a collection of other drought-tolerant plants.
  • Play up this plant’s common names—“stonecrop” and “live forever”—in promotional signage. The names alone will assure customers sedum is a tough, long-lived perennial.
